Dr. Anita’s Top 5 Tips for Dry Skin

Dr Anita’s Top 5 tips for Dry Skin

1: Wash

Wash with tepid water ( not too hot) as the hotter the water the more likely you are to strip the skin of its important oils, that keep the skin hydrated.

2: Cleanse

Choose gentle, non-foaming cleansers. The chemicals used to make a product foam tend to be very drying and once again can strip the skin of its lipids, making its hydration barriers weak an dryness worse.

3: Exfoliate
Our skin cells have a lifecycle. The new cells start off deep in our skin layers and as they age they lose volume and hydration and move towards the top layer of the skin, called the epidermis. This layer mainly consists of dead skin cells. As the name implies these cells can give your complexion a dull and lifeless look. For a fresher, more radiant look, gently exfoliate at least once or twice a week. For normal or dry skin types use a well-formulated Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) product such as one containing Glycolic or Lactic acid.

Use a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) product such as Salicylic acid, if your skin is oily or prone to spots.

These exfoliators can help your skin cells to turn over in a more natural, youthful manner by removing the build-up of old skin cells and replacing them with newer, smoother ones.

Dry skin is often vulnerable to sensitivity, because when skin is dehydrated its protective barriers break down, making skin susceptible to inflammation, infection and water loss. Strengthen your skin with a nourishing and gentle serum. Look for stem cells, antioxidants and peptides, which are great for boosting the skins health

5:Hydrate and moisturise

Choose a gentle, intensely hydrating daily moisturiser, ideally one with SPF 30 protection, to protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Your moisturiser should be filled to the brim with antioxidants, ingredients that help your skin to hold on to water, skin-repairing ingredients and anti-inflammatory ingredients. I absolutely love products containing Hyaluronic. This is a moisture- loving ingredient that draws water into the skin and keeps it there. It also helps to stimulate collagen remodelling, the important protein needed to keep your skin elastic andstrong- a great anti-ageing and hydrating tool.

Don’t forget your lips: Lips are prone to drying out easily. Do not leave your lips naked day or night. During the day it is essential to apply and reapply an emollient lipstick or gloss. At night, do not go to sleep without protecting your lips with an emollient lip balm all year-round.
